Menzione Geografica Barolo PERNO & GIACONE

Perno is a Cru in the commune of Monforte d'Alba just beloved Castiglione Faletto and bordered with Serralungha d'Aba, on a hill located about 300 meters above sea level with the west, south-west exposure. The vines are found on soils characterizes by clay-limestone soils rich in gray sand with marine fossils on looser and less fertile, *Helvetian soils, which include both sandstone and limestone. This leads to a brick-colored wine which is more intense, bigger in structure and requires a longer time to age. Monforte D'Alba offers rich, concentrated characteristics and serious intensity.
The wines coming from this Cru got the classic "tar and roses" aroma, bright ruby color with firm tannins, elevated acidity, and relatively high alcohol.
The history of Elio Sandri begins in 1965 with the purchase by Elio's father of Cascina Disa located on the top of a hill in the municipality of Monforte, the 1979 cellar was recently expanded.
This is a true artisan and old school contadino "grower", fermentations are long with lots of extracts with punching down absolutely only indigenous yeast are used and after the primary fermentation, the wine will be moved into large Garbellotti Botti 20 and 40 hl.
2010 we know it is a special vintage however this wine was truly noble...
Bright ruby color with the brick fades almost not present, so youthful. Translucent with a Chambolle luminosity:
tar, rose, violet, licorice, wild berries, spice element with truffle and mushroom underbrush forest floor. Noble nose with the elegant palate with the rusticity of an old school Barolo, firm tannin present with the need of great meat to break down, in this case, we did a duck breast cooked in a tomato reduction sauce slow-cooked.
The Perno Barolo was in continuous evolution losing the austerity with time and open up with incredible nuance and finesse.
A Barolo with a pedigree...

Barbaresco Giacone Cru in the village of Treiso
Giacone is a vast zone that extends from Rocche Massalupo to the left to Castelletto to the right.
The overall surface is around 90 hectares with an altitude between 230 to 460 meter above sea level
31% is cultivated in Nebbiolo, 39% on Moscato and the rest is a mix of Barbera, Dolcetto and a mix of white varieties.

From the Giacone Cru lately we had 2015 by Cascina Alberta a family business located in Treiso, the vines in their Giacone plot are 40 years old at 350 meters of altitude with a sud/ ovest exposition on very sandy, calcareous soil. Farming here is completely organic with some biodynamic practice.
The wine was ruby in color with crystalline luminosity a slightly orange rim dictate by the typicity of the Nebbiolo grape good viscosity without express high potential alcohol.
The nose is floral with rose, violet, and cherry under the spirit hints of leather, cherry wood, and tar.
Great structure of tannin fine grain but muscular. Long intensity with a core of finesse and Nebbiolo elegance.

The harvest is done by hand in a 20 kg box in October. The grapes arrived in the cellar are gently pressed, the fermentation takes place through the use of ambient yeast in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature with daily pumping for 30 days. After the wine is drawn off in large Slavonian oak barrels, where the malolactic fermentation takes place.

*The Helvetian/Serravallian soil is mainly composed of sandstone and sand. It is poorer, less compact and less fertile than Tortonian. The wines of Monforte d'Alba, Serralunga d'Alba and part of Castiglione Falletto show more power and depth and are fuller in body, more robust and structured.
