Cahors Simon Busser - Corbières Maziere Fabrice Monnin

SIMON BUSSER from the village in Prayssac, in the AOC Cahors:
Cahors is a small town in southwestern France, located 160km to the east of Bordeaux. The climate here is subject to multiple influences; from the Atlantic coast which bring a continental climate, and the Mediterranean from the south which gives a maritime influence. We can divide the AOC into two different terroirs the "Causses" based limestone plateau that produces more tannic, mineral lived wines. The other vineyards profile is the one that influenced by the river Lot with a more gravelly slope which makes more approachable wines on the fruity spectrum profile.
Cahors is home of Malbec, Bordeaux grapes mainly Merlot, and also a small amount of Tannat more present in the neighborhood Madiran AOC.
Simon Busser has been training with Olivier Cousin in the Loire. He returns to his village Prayssac and start to looking after his father’s vineyards. He works his small vineyard with a horse, as Cousin taught him. Cahors is known to make rich big deep and dark wines. Simon makes wines on the mineral profile with delicacy and finesse.
2014 L'Originel
No evidence of aging, the color is still young penetrating lots of stony rocky minerality with a salty element which in red is very hard to find it; that kind of sapid savory-ness. Blue fruit just matures, the tannins are elegant, little pyrazine notes from the Merlot, which is quite pleasant. Alcohol is very refreshing stands at 12%. A bottle called another, but quite a serious wine, if you want to remember the old days good Bordeaux bottle of the 60, here we are.
Simon Busser took over his property 'Les Rouges' from his grandfather and makes this Cuvee of Malbec and Merlot in his honor.

2015 Fabrice Monnin Maziere Corbieries
Corbieres is an important appellation in the Roussillon area, a large region starts from the Pyrenean foothills in the south part, and west to the coastal area near Narbonne. There is a great variety of terrain and climate; mostly schistous soils. The vineyards of the northernmost area are known as Alaric, on the slopes of the Montagne d'Alaric, extended exposure to the sun, helping to ripen the Mourvèdre grapes in particular.

Fabrice Monnin is the guy behind Maziere located in the village of Padern, in the center of Corbieres:
After many years running the well-known wine bar, Les Zinszins du Vin in Besançon, Fabrice & Momoko Monnin moved to this remote village. They took over ‘Maziere' from the Labouygues family making their first vintage in 2013. The vines are all average between 60-100 years old, with some of the oldest planted in 1902. The grapes are processed through a vertical press and aged in old barrels. Vinification is done separately depending on the grape variety and each barrel ages differently. Two hectares of vines are made up of Grenache, Macabeu, Carignan, and Syrah also some obscure local varieties.
"Carignan is the grape in this Cuvee fermented through a vertical press and aged in old barrels. Vinification is done in the barrel too. Fabrice & Momoko pay specific attention to each barrel, not always topping them up. this wine shows a unique singularity with depth, bright cherry color concentration, sour raspberry, and cherry marmalade, sandy earthy minerality alongside complexity and elegance, despite the high alcohol we find a great freshness.
Fabrice explains how the similar soil characters to that of the Jura in Padern assist in the development of a ‘flor’ of yeast, which results in a very carefully controlled intentional oxidation of the wine.
