Ca Boit de Vin Libre is Damien Bastien Goddard

The wines of Savoie, are produced in the eastern part of France, nestled in the Alpine region near the borders of Switzerland and Italy. Savoie is a relatively small wine region, but it boasts a diverse range of unique and charming wines. The vineyards are scattered across the steep slopes of the French Alps, where the cool climate and mineral-rich soils contribute to the distinct character of the wines. The Savoie wine region is primarily known for its white wines, although it also produces some delightful reds and rosés. The white wines account for the majority of the production and are made from grape varieties such as Jacquère, Altesse (also known as Roussette), and Chasselas. Jacquère is the most widely planted grape in the region and produces crisp, dry wines with delicate floral and citrus notes. Altesse, on the other hand, is a more aromatic variety, giving rise to wines with a fuller body, hints of honey, and a touch of minerality. Roussette de Savoie is a special appellation within Savoie that exclusively produces white wines from the Altesse grape. These wines are highly regarded and known for their complexity, often displaying flavors of ripe stone fruits, almonds, and a pronounced mineral character.

Another noteworthy white grape variety in Savoie is the Chasselas. While it's more commonly associated with Swiss wines, it also thrives in Savoie's cool climate. Chasselas wines from Savoie tend to be light-bodied, crisp, and refreshing, with subtle fruit flavors and a distinct floral aroma.

In Haute-Savoie:

Subzones along the edge of Lake Geneva are Crépy, Marignan, Marin, Ripaille, on the shores of Lake Geneva down to Jongieux on the edges of Mont du Chat, and through to the banks of the Isère River.  in the north of the region, most wines are required to be made predominantly from the Chasselas grape variety.

Ca Boit de Vin Libre is a project led by Damien Bastien Goddard. Damien is the winemaker and owner of the winery, known for his passion and dedication to crafting unique and expressive wines. He is focusing on organic farming methods, avoiding the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers in the vineyards. The winemaking process is carried out with minimal intervention, allowing the natural fermentation process to occur spontaneously and using little to no added sulfites. This approach aims to showcase the pure expression of the grapes and the unique characteristics of the Savoie terroir.
This small winery is known for its natural and organic winemaking practices, producing wines with minimal intervention and a focus on expressing the terroir and grape varietals.
The wines from Ca Boit de Vin Libre are vibrant, energetic, and full of personality. They exhibit a range of flavors and aromas, influenced by the specific grape varieties and the natural winemaking techniques employed.
Marignan cru is located on the southern banks of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), immediately southwest of Thonon-les-Bains, Marignan is one of Savoie's most northerly crus; they are predominantly based on the Chasselas grape variety, displaying floral characters and delicate minerality.
The Marignan cru covers the administrative commune of Sciez at the foot of the Mont de Boissy hill on the lakeshore. The vineyards themselves stretch up the northeastern slopes of the hill, where they have a view of Lake Geneva (locally known as Lac Léman).

notes of white flowers, citrus blossoms, green apples, pears, and a mineral element as wet stone. The aroma profile makes the wine fresh and crisp.
On the palate, Chasselas from Damien is full of lightness and lively acidity. Dry with a crisp, zesty character. Flavors of citrus fruits, such as lemon or grapefruit, are present, along with hints of green apple, pear, and a touch of herbal or floral notes. A medium body with a silky and smooth texture. The mouthfeel can is super refreshing with a leaving pleasant sensation.  The wine leaves a crisp and invigorating sensation on the palate.

Damien Bastian was born in Annemasse. He has many years of experience (even though he is only in his early forties) in vegetable growing and in developing complex vegetable systems in Chad. His first gig in wine was from a well-known Savoyard winemaker, Dominique Lucas. Then in 2017, he settled on 75 acres of chasselas vines in the Marignan appellation (Savoie) less than 1km from Lake Geneva. His Winery is called " Ça Boit Libre ", a play on words to speak of freedom but also of the independence of his region ("Savoie Libre"). Obviously, such a large surface area does not allow him to make a living from it and Damien therefore continues in 2018 and 2019 to work as a farmhand for Anne & Jean-François Ganevat, famous Jura winegrowers. Two years of going back and forth to work his vines in parallel and above all to enrich his experience in the elaboration of natural white wines.
Damien Bastian, is the grandson of a well-known agricultural engineer in the region, André Goddard who was the person in 1973 who formed the "Vin de Savoie" appellation. In fact, the name Damien uses on his labels (Damien Bastien Goddard) recognizes his grandfather’s inheritance using his surname, Goddard.
In 2019, Damien acquired the vineyards from retired vigneron Jean-Marie Chappuis and launched his project.
Damien currently works on 3.2 hectares, reds and whites are mixed together. For the whites, the Swiss Chasselas, Altesse; and for the reds, Pinot noir, and Gamay.

The wines are incredibly expressive and individual, each spending different amounts of time on its own lees and bottled without any additions.

The wines show a wonderful duality, an internal boost of weight, consistency, acidity, and salinity. His attention to detail and love for the land in which he lives and works, are present in his wines.

A GREAT VIGNERON...
