Caravaglio is a renowned wine producer located in Salina, a picturesque island in the Aeolian archipelago of Italy. With a rich history dating back to the 1800s, Caravaglio has become synonymous with producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the island.
The winery is known for its dedication to traditional winemaking techniques and its commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the land. The vineyards of Caravaglio are nestled on the volcanic slopes of Salina, benefiting from the fertile volcanic soil, abundant sunshine, and cooling sea breezes, which contribute to the distinctive character of their wines.
Nino Caravaglio primarily focuses on producing wines from indigenous grape varieties, such as Malvasia delle Lipari, Corinto Nero, and Nerello Mascalese. These grape varieties thrive in the island's terroir and showcase the rich flavors and aromas unique to Salina.
The winemaking process involves a careful balance between tradition and innovation. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and meticulously sorted to ensure only the finest fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks or oak barrels, and Amphora all depending on the style of wine being produced. The winery's skilled winemakers employ techniques that respect the natural characteristics of the grapes, resulting in wines that capture the essence of Salina. Their wines are celebrated for their elegance, complexity, and ability to express the unique island terroir. Whether it's a crisp and vibrant white wine, a rich and velvety red, or a luscious sweet wine, Caravaglio Salina aims to provide a memorable tasting experience that showcases the distinct flavors of Salina.

Caravaglio Bianco Abissale 2021 (malvasia Lipari) - white
The vines grow in the volcanic soil on the north side of the island of Lipari, aging in barrels and having nice minerality and a great aromatic profile. Abissale has a dense nose with bergamot and mountain pine, a hint of toasted dried fruit in the background, saline, clean, volcanic, and long-lasting mouth.

Nino (Antonino) Caravaglio comes from a historical family of Salina, the central island of the archipelago. In Salina, agriculture has always played a fundamental role, even surpassing that of fishing. For centuries, the key products of the economy of this land were wine and capers. Due to the early death of his father, it was the determination and sacrifice of his mother that supported Nino through schooling, at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Catania. He inherited 2 hectares of vineyards and began his adventure in 1989, with the goal of developing the quality of the product. Aiming at quality immediately meant an important choice: organic farming. Today, the Azienda Agricola Caravaglio has about 20 hectares, divided into many parcels, some of which are on the other islands of the Aeolian archipelago as well. Nino manages the entire supply chain, from production to sale of the bottled wine, with insights that have opened to innovative ways, without ever betraying history and traditions.

2021 Caravaglio Nero di Munti
100% Corinto Nero
"Corinto Nero is a dark-skinned red wine grape from the eastern Mediterranean. It is grown most widely in Greece and Turkey but has made its way as far west as Italy, specifically northeastern Sicily and the Po Valley in Emilia-Romagna, where it is known as Tarmarina.
In the modern wine world, Corinto Nero grapes are used most notably in the volcanic Aeolian Islands off the northeastern Sicilian coast, generally covered in most wine styles by the Salina IGT denomination."
From Wine-Searcher website.

The Corinto Nero, just like the Malvasia di Lipari, is a native vine of the volcanic Aeolian Islands. In this case, it is pure and harvested from the vineyards on the island of Lipari, which are located in an old crater called Fossa del Monte (a pit of the mountain).
These plants survived the phylloxera attack thanks to the composition of the soil in the crater, which contains ash, sand, and pumice.
One century-year-old ungrafted plants (about half a hectare), and grafted plants (one hectare), give birth to this wine.
The vineyards face southwest and are 300 meters above sea level.
This wine ages in Amphora for about one year.
A ruby red color, with purple hues. Youthful, red, and black fruit notes, such as ripe cherries, blackberries, and plums, which contribute to the wine's fruity character. Also, hints of floral nuances, such as violets or roses, add a touch of elegance to the aromatic profile.
On the palate, showcase a medium to full body with moderate to high levels of acidity and tannins. The acidity brings freshness and liveliness to the wine, while the tannins contribute to its structure and mouthfeel. Flavors of red and black fruits are prevalent, along with pleasant juiciness. Ripe berries, cherries, and plums may dominate the taste, complemented by subtle herbal or spicy undertones.
A lingering fruity impression on the palate. The tannins may provide a slight grip or firmness, offering a pleasant texture. The finish can be lengthy and satisfying.

2021 Palmento di Salina
The Palmento di Salina wine shows a bright rose color. More than any other wine, it really represents the traditional ways of the Aeolian Islands: using Corinto Nero and macerating in the typical concrete and stone basin (“Palmento”). Savory minerality, textural freshness, and lovely mouth-feeling.

Heroic viticulture conducted on volcanic soils. From the mountains to the sea, on the island of Salina. Nino Caravaglio, practices organic farming on a few hectares of vineyard in Malfa.

Their wines offer a taste of the island's natural beauty and the skilled craftsmanship of the winemakers.
