Els Jelipins " El Penedès Superior a place called Font-Rubí

Els Jelipins

Owner & winemaker: Glòria Garriga & her daughter Berta

Gloria with her husband and daughter, they start making wine in 2001 I a very very special plots of El Penedès Superior a place called Font-Rubí, on alluvial soil with slate, granite, and quartz; clay and limestone.

Sumoll, the grape that all their wines are based on:

Winemakers like Glòria, who appreciate Sumoll's unique beauty and mineral notes, play a crucial role in changing the trend and encouraging the recovery of this grape variety. Their dedication to preserving and showcasing the distinct characteristics of Sumoll contributes not only to the biodiversity of the region but also to the diversity of wines available to consumers.

Drought-resistant and naturally low-yielding, add to its uniqueness and character. The fact that it was nearly extinct in the 1980s, with less than one hundred hectares planted in 2013, highlights the efforts required to preserve and promote indigenous grape varieties.

Ageing is done in neutral cherry-wood casks, large-volume Italian barrels, used French casks, terracotta amphoras, and concrete vats. Long, smooth, and slow.

2016 Els Jelipins Red

100% Sumoll 80-year-old vines on alluvial soil with slate, granite, and quartz.

The nose unfolds with a rich tapestry of berries, where cherries and ripe plums dance alongside subtle notes of wild herbs and a stony minerality.

On the palate, the wine showcases the true character of Sumoll - a fine balance between power and elegance. Bold flavors of blackberries and currants mingle with nuances of licorice, complemented by a touch of cocoa and well-integrated oak. The wine's structured tannins provide a solid backbone, lending depth and longevity to the experience.

The finish is enduring, leaving an impression of velvety smoothness and a subtle echo of the Mediterranean terroir. As the last sip lingers, a faint minerality emerges, reminiscent of the sun-drenched soils that nurture the vines.
